November 30, 2021Why visit French Polynesia by yacht
Isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, over 1000 miles from anywhere, French Polynesia sits proudly as a glistening mirage of blue, green and turquoise. Within the 118 islands and atolls, everything revolves around the ocean and a yacht charter is the ultimate way to best experience the island-hopping lifestyle on offer. The islands all invoke a blissful and carefree atmosphere which has charmed travellers for decades, and there is an intrinsic understanding and respect for nature.
Clustered into five archipelagos: the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands, all have in common a delightful blend of Polynesian and French cultures, and a consistently tropical climate. The alluring scenery of pristine lagoons and tropical volcanic peaks is the frequently conceived vision of paradise, but a scratch below the surface reveals that there is so much more on offer amongst these islands that can be explored by yacht. A varied and unique experience can be found across the archipelagos resulting in a destination that can accommodate those seeking the boutique luxury spas found in Bora Bora as easily as individuals wanting a cultural escape in the Austral islands. A yacht charter enables seamless access to all these areas and guests can immerse themselves fully into the array of both relaxing and adventurous activities, while being accommodated in complete luxury.
What is available in French Polynesia
French Polynesia has always been synonymous as a natural and tranquil tropical destination that runs at its own pace. The islands are packed, however, with a mix of tropical adventure and blissful relaxation that can all be accessed via the crystal-clear cruising grounds. The range of both passive and active activities is almost limitless and can accommodate all visitors whether on the land or on the water.
Many of the activities in French Polynesia focus on the endless blue lagoons of the region and all the islands are home to an abundance of underwater wildlife. Fish, dolphins, rays, sharks, turtles and more inhabit these clear-water coral gardens that are as excellent for snorkelling as they are for diving and swimming. Diving can be directly arranged from the yacht, alongside the array of water sport activities that can be done within the safety of the reefed lagoons.
On the land, beach combing bright white sandy beaches and boutique spas and resorts adds an intense sense relaxation to a luxury escape. Adventuring further into the tropical interior of the islands you can traverse the mountainous terrain of Moorea by 4×4, hike to waterfalls lost in forested valleys, or take a local guide who will demonstrate the natural and cultural history of the islands. Cruising between the archipelagos, all these activities and more are best unlocked through a yacht charter where guests have unlimited access to all the islands they desire to visit.
What to See in Polynesia
Bora Bora
Beautiful Bora Bora is the one to watch. While most of the overwater bungalows are filled with lovestruck couples, yacht charter guests will still find plenty of peace and serenity on the soft lagoons. It’s worth stepping ashore for one night to sleep in the stilted luxury homes that hang over the blue waters. Other than sleeping in stilted bliss, head for the beach of Matira and go hiking up the verdant trails of Mount Otemanu.
Tahiti
Tahiti may be free of long white beaches but her endless lagoons make her a sailor’s delight. The vision of green clad peaks framing turquoise colors and tumbling falls is enough to blow your mind on day one. Delve a little deeper and discover the primal pleasures of the Vaima Pool with its healing touch, whale watching safaris, and spring gardens that froth with color. Visit the waterfront capital of Papa’ete to soak up the buzzing culture before returning to your yacht charter for supper beneath the stars.
Moorea
Near vertical peaks, lush mountains, and those iridescent lagoons you have been dreaming of – Moorea is a place of magic. The sand beaches here are lunar white and the whole vibe is a lot less touristy than the sister island of Tahiti. If you want to step off your yacht then rent a bicycle and take to the trails that weave around the island, stopping every few miles for a fresh coconut water. Visit the Tiki Village and witness legends come to life in the guise of local song and dance as you feast on local dishes. Finally, anchor offshore and plunge into the blue to swim alongside mantas and sharks.
When to Charter a Yacht in Polynesia
The sweet months between June and August are the best times to consider chartering a yacht in Polynesia. During these weeks, the weather is dry, bright, and balmy sitting comfortably between late 20’s and 30’s. November to April bring tropical showers and a slightly higher level of humidity, the latter which will encourage you to stay in the water all day.
