Yacht crew lifestyle: what it’s like onboard

April 14, 2025 TUTINO YACHTS Insights Comments: 0 News

Amazing sights, different meals, water toys, new ports, while you might be thinking this is associated with a yacht owner or guests, which is infact true but in this case, we are looking at the crew and their life on board.

As more yachts are being built so is the requirement for more yacht crews, the average number of crew required for a very large yacht can be 30 or more, which means lots of job openings. With patience and determination within a short period you can work your way up to being an officer on board which comes with many good opportunities.

The two basic certifications that both the captain and crew must strive to acquire in order to be accepted to work on a yacht are Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) which encompasses first aid training, firefighting, and prevention training amongst others. The other is the Seafarers Medical Certificate to show that your health level is strong enough to work and travel on board.

Now the life on board; while crew members have a slightly different experience than the guests, they still get to enjoy the benefits as well. When not working or serving the guests, you get to see amazing sights on board and offshore as well. You get to meet people who you may end up creating lifelong friendships with, and we all know the saying, friendship is the wine of life – Edward Young. And finally, the financial reward of all of it. While on board, you get to save a lot more on living expense, now isn’t that a catch?

The work aspect of it all is nothing one cannot handle, even though it is not your typical 9-5 where u get a standard break at the same time each day and week, you still get a time where you can relax and enjoy the cruise while the guests are doing so as well. Working over the holidays is something common among yacht crews and putting in the work means you can still get the best out of being a superyacht crew even on those days.

Being a crew on a yacht is rewarding and you get to attend different events specially organized for crew members which may include workshops with social activities and pub quiz where you can connect with more likeminded crew members from all around.
